July - Afrikaans Olympiad
‘n Klein bietjie oor myself:
  • My gunsteling sport is hokkie en ek speel dit elke week
  • My gunsteling kleur is pienk, en as dit so kon wees, sou al my goed pienk wees.

I have an interest in contemporary art and fashion design. I like roaming around town – Kalk Bay and China Town to see what new designs there are.

I enjoy dancing – I have done some dance shows in the past but I took a break because of matric work. I would like to go into yoga soon. I enjoy travelling and experiencing old historic buildings and artefacts.

I am privileged to have come 15th in the Western Cape. Afrikaans is a challenge especially in an English school. It isn’t my home language but I like the challenge and closeness in our Afrikaans Home Language class.

May 2010 - Fledging

As part of EHS' Founder’s Week celebrations, commemorating our 25th anniversary, the Arts Department staged a unique, learner-led production called Fledging. Incorporating Mr Lawrence's theme for the year, "edging towards excellence" with the name of the school and community. Eventually the idea came from the birds in the play and we chose the verb meaning "providing a wing for flight", rather than the noun "fledgling" which is a young inexperienced person. The play was predominantly scripted and directed by the learners themselves, with much of the musical score composed by the music students too. Performances took place in the first week of May, to two full houses – and much acclaim. As Mr Lawrence said after the gala performance in his address to the cast, "You have left a legacy." Congratulations to all involved on a delightful and truly unique production!

A few words from the directors…

We love you. We think you’re awesome. How many times have we repeated this phrase after rehearsals? Sometimes because we consciously needed reminding of the fact, and many more times because it was a natural response to the eager faces sitting before us! What an immense privilege to work with this special group of learners, who have given their all (and even beyond) to make their mark and be a part of this production. When Mr Lawrence speaks about making a difference, leaving a legacy and having life in abundance – these learners are a living testimony of that vision. The school has seen their commitment, enthusiasm and the bond that they, as a cast of 80 learners, have formed – this is where school pride and spirit begins. This is where making the difference begins.
And what a journey we have made – from the first rehearsals watching 12 learners trying desperately to fit on to a single desk (even if it meant Byron hanging upside down!) to the countless rewritten versions of the scripts, to the eventual move into the hall and all the chaos in between. Not only have we survived, but we have overcome – that elusive lunchbox has finally been reached and we can all take a deep breath... and maybe get to bed at a decent hour without lines, actions and songs running through our minds.
I think everyone can agree that the design elements of this production have been phenomenal! Miss Erasmus and Mrs Bates have excelled themselves in the beauty of their creations and should be duly commended. If we think we have spent endless hours at rehearsals, they put us to shame working into the late hours of each night (or is that the early hours of each morning?) – even working right through the night to have costumes ready for the first dress rehearsal. We could not be more grateful or honoured to work with people of such commitment and dedication. Thank you; you are the heroes that make this all possible!
On behalf of the cast and directors, I’d like to thank Mrs Vermaak and Mrs Volgraaff for their loving support which came in various forms of muffins, boerewors rolls and other "boxes of happiness". Cast (and staff!) welfare and love cannot ever be underestimated – what a difference a simple muffin makes during a long rehearsal! Thank you ladies, for seeing and caring – you have been such an incredible pillar of support.
Mr Lawrence – this has been our labour of love for you. We cannot begin to express our gratitude for your support and the freedom you gave us in every aspect of this production. Thank you for the vision you have for our school; it inspires us to do the work we do, to push ourselves (and the learners) beyond our comfort zones and to step out into the darkness to pull them back into the light as we continue to edge towards excellence.
Matthew Hill – thank you for stepping in and assisting with the sound/lighting; you have been a great asset!
And to the unseen heroes of a production like this: the ever patient and supportive parents. You can be so very proud of your child; they have worked incredibly hard and given of themselves in a way that many young people never experience. They have dedicated themselves to a cause greater than themselves and have become a credit to the school, themselves and of course, you. Thank you for being understanding about attendance during rehearsals, for doing late night taxi duty and for loving them in their exhaustion.
To the cast: thank you for putting up with 4 (at times) cranky teachers, for working so hard and never complaining; it has been an honour working with you. You have made this whole experience worth the while for us, in fact, you are the very reason we put ourselves through this – and no matter how exhausted or discouraged we get, it’s your eager faces and cheerful smiles that inspire us to continue. We are so proud of each one of you!
  • We love you
  • We think you’re awesome
