Edging Towards Excellence (Theme for the Year)
Extracted from the 2010 Opening Assembly:
- "25 YEARS! - Ours is a young school that celebrates a quarter of a century and in that time just look at what we have achieved, especially in the last two years! Just imagine what we can achieve this year, the years that you have left at EHS and by the end of another 25 years! How are we going to reflect on this year come 10 December 2010?
- "We took it Step by Step last year and achieved much - we learnt to work harder, to achieve greater heights, to overcome obstacles, to stand proud and to give each other a helping hand. We are therefore Edging Towards Excellence - our theme for 2010. We are not at the end point but just edging closer to our goals - these are goals of excellence in all spheres of our school's life but with an emphasis on academics.
- "What has been done so far to move towards that excellence? You would have noticed the clean grounds, the clean buildings and your clean classrooms - courtesy of all the hard work of our ground and building staff. You have new walkways and we are working towards upgrading the downstairs girls' toilets (courtesy of the money you raised). We have extended our fields. The one computer centre has been upgraded.
- "Though we don't have everything, we are edging closer to those areas of excellence. The music chosen for this year is by John Mayer called "Waiting for the world to change". The song reflects where we and the world are now and future generations are waiting for change, as the world does not offer the younger generations much now. I want us to challenge this theory. We cannot wait for our world to change - we cannot stand at a distance and expect everything to be done for us. This is your future and you have to play a role - make it a future that you want to live in - live on the edge and move towards excellence!
- "Our challenge to you is - how are you going to contribute to our move towards excellence? Will you ensure our grounds and buildings remain clean and graffiti free? Will you be responsible and help create a safe environment eg say no to theft, drugs, vandalism? Will you use your talents to promote the image of EHS eg the soccer team of last year and the cricket team winning the 6 a side tournament and the excellent matric results.
- "Will you ensure that teachers will be able to teach and challenge you? Will you allow your peers to learn in an academic environment? Without your positive contribution and discipline, we cannot edge towards excellence. Set your Academic and Extra Curricular goals - make yourself proud, make us proud that we are all Edgemedians and that we can celebrate our 25 years of existence with excellence! We can never do this alone. Psalm 118:7 : "The Lord is with me. He is my helper."
- "We cannot edge towards excellence without guidance and support - never be afraid or too proud to ask for help!"
