isiXhosa
Head: Mrs G Zoleka
Xhosa belongs to the Nguni group of languages which includes Zulu, Swazi and Ndebele. It is the main African language spoken in the Eastern and Western Cape, but it is also spoken and understood in other parts of the country.
Here in South Africa, after apartheid, Mr Mandela proposed that it will be better if someone can learn someone's language because we have many languages in this country, including sign language. In the Western Cape we have three official languages, including isiXhosa.
It is very important for the learners to choose the subject because in the long run the subject will help them. Especially to those who will choose education at the university, some universities such as Stellenbosch isiXhosa is compulsory to under-graduates. Even those who will be doctors one day, Xhosa will help them because sometimes they will end up working in government hospitals and there they will definitely be dealing with people who do not understand English.
Our mission is to teach the pupils to speak, write, present and enjoy the language. In grade 9 they take conversational Xhosa and in grade 10 pupils can choose between Afrikaans First Additional or IsiXhosa First Additional language.
isiXhosa Second Additional Language is also an option.
What Does The Language Involve?
The subject involves the structure of the language such as:
- The study of speech sounds
- Study the patterns of speech sounds in a language
- The study of the internal structure of words
- To study about how words are combined to form sentences
- To study about the meaning of words
